Description

Scholars and policy-makers have a vested interest in assessing the trends, attitudes, and laws that affect how men and women and blacks and whites make a living. This research helps to understand and remedy historical disadvantages, and assists in evaluating the effectiveness of controversial policies such as affirmative action and civil rights legislation. Studies that address labor market trends often focus on how African Americans fare in the job market relative to whites. However, significantly less attention is given to the labor market performance of African American women relative to African American men (Corcoran, 1999). There are a variety of theories and approaches that arrive at different conclusions in attempts to assess or predict whether black men or women succeed more often in the workplace. Because stereotypes and hiring practices are both gendered and racially disparate, it is important to approach the study of economic and social disparities on the basis of race and gender, and not just race. Three approaches that generate an understanding of the differences in hiring practices are: double-disadvantage theories, sex-segregation theories, and black matriarch theories.
